BŁYSKAWICA

In 1942, in occupied Warsaw, a daring and risky initiative was born. Under the Germans’ nose, in the underground conditions, a modern submachine gun “Blyskawica” was designed and an attempt to mass-produce the gun was launched. Many people were involved which increased the risk of exposure; the organizational and logistical difficulties were piling up; nevertheless, the seemingly surreal goal was successfully achieved. Several hundred pieces of an efficient modern weapon were manufactured and, alongside the serious shortage in the supply, they managed to succour the Polish soldiers who fought in the Warsaw Uprising.

The history of the “Blyskawica” gun is a story of mutual trust and co-operation in the extreme conditions. Despite the tragic end to the national rebellion that the Warsaw Uprising was destined to, the movie itself is a full of optimism  testimony to the strength that comes from solidarity. The eyewitnesses’ accounts of the events from 70 years ago are revived in a vivid and intimate way. It turns out that nothing is so simple, straightforward and unequivocal as it might seem.
