THE RETROSPECTIVE OF MARCEL AND PAWEŁ ŁOZIŃSKI AT THE DEI POPOLI FESTIVAL

On Saturday 30th November, the 54th edition of Dei Popoli Festival starts in Florence. One of the main points of the festival programme is the retrospective of films by Marcel and Paweł Łoziński. In addition, two Polish films will be shown at the festival: “Left side of the face” by Marcin Bortkiewicz in the competitive section and “Abu Haraz” by Maciej Drygas - in non-competitive screening.

The Dei Popoli Festival, organised in Florence, boasts a long history. Its first edition took place in 1959. During more than 50 years of its existence the Festival managed to become a recognised brand in the documentary film branch. In addition to the competition section, reviews of the works by famous filmmakers are an important part of the festival programme. There were retrospectives of many renowned filmmakers such as: Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, John Cassavetes, Ken Loach, Nagisa Oshima, Lindsay Anderson, Aleksandr Sokurov, Jørgen Leth, Claire Simon, Thomas Heise, Peter Mettler, Isaki Lacuesta, Andrés Di Tella, Raymond Depardon and Claudine Nougaret.

This year, the organisers of the festival decided to honour Marcel and Paweł Łoziński, including the review of films made by them in the programme. As it is indicated in the title of the retrospective -"Father & Son: A Journey into Cinema "- it was inspired by the film experiment conducted by the Łozińskis, which resulted in the films “Father and Son” by Paweł and “Father and Son on a Journey” by Marcel.

In the programme, there is over 30 films, both well-known ones, which were awarded around the world, such as “89 mm from Europe” (1993 - Academy Award nomination), or “Chemo” (2009 - Prix Europa award), and the less popular ones. The organisers intend to show how the last 40 years of Polish history is mirrored in films by the Łozińskis, and this is why the retrospective includes some of the first films by Marcel Łoziński, made in the early 1970s, and reaches the latest project by the directors.

In total, within the frames of the retrospective, 20 films by Marcel Łoziński and 13 films by Paweł Łoziński will be shown. They are:
