POLISH FILMS AWARDED AT DOCS AGAINST GRAVITY FILM FESTIVAL
On Saurday, May 16, 2015, the awards of the 12th Docs Against Gravity Film Festival were given. Among the winners, there are also Polish films.
The jury, consisting of Syllas Tzoumerkas, Mikołaj Pokromski and Rafael Lewandowski, gave the two main awards of the 12th edition of Docs Against Gravity Film Festival jointly to the documentary films "Something better to come" by Hanna Polak and "Above and Below" by Nicolas Steiner. According to the jury, "Something better to come" is a film which accompanies its characters for a very long time, reaching the deep truth about the being and essence of our experience of humanity, regardless of where we are from. After all, we all hope that - just like in the film's title - something better really comes, as Hanna Polak courageously shows in her film," the jury justified their decision.
"Something better to come" got also the Non-fiction Frame award "for incredible courage, consistence and patience of being with a human being for several years in terrifyingly difficult circumstances. For creating an intimate and extremely poignant image, in which the camera, discreetly capturing the smallest details, builds a special bond between the viewer and the characters and their stories."
"15 corners of the world" by Zuzanna Solakiewicz was given the special mention in the best music film category. The award was given by the jury consisting of: Stefan Schwietert, Natalia Przybysz, Agnieszka Szydłowska, Piotr Kowalczyk and Bartek Winczewski.
The documentary by Zuzanna Solakiewicz tells the story of Eugeniusz Rudnik, who revolutionised the notion of music using a couple of scissors and magnetic tape. The member of the legendary Experimental Studio in the Polish Radio, he discovered the value hidden in broken, rejected sounds long before the era of the DJs dawned. In times when electronic music was made on the equipment from scientific laboratory, he showed how to use it to reach out to other human being and tell a story about him. "15 corners of the world" is an attempt to hear his music with the eyes. Following the rhythm of architecture, the movement of human body, pulsating heartbeat of nature, we rediscover the surrounding reality. We touch the sound! Moving pictures show the wonder which came true in the era of tape recorders and disappeared with the coming of computers. They express delight in the wonderful analogue era and the need to experiment – to discover unknown regions, to test boundaries, and to constantly search for new means of expression.
