"JOANNA" AWARDED AT THE MAKEDOX FESTIVAL

On Friday, 20th June, the fifth edition of the Macedonian festival MakeDox came to an end. The festival brought new laurels for the documentary by Aneta Kopacz, "Joanna." The film won the Special Moral Approach Award.

The closing and award gala of the Make Dox festival was held last Friday, 20th June, in the capital of Macedonia - Skopje. The jury of this young festival, the fifth edition of which was held this year, appreciated the moving documentary by Aneta Kopacz, "Joanna." The jury, consisting of: Ana Jovkovska (Macedonia), Bratko Bibič (Slovenia) and Stefan Sidovski (Macedonia) decided to give the film the Special Moral Approach Award.

The jury justified its verdict in the following way: “this film is an incredible visual poetics about Joanna’s last days, her incurable illness and family relations as well as the simple, valuable life morals that she hands down to her young son. The story is narrated in a subtle, ethical and dignified manner. Pathos and sensationalism are artfully avoided despite the harsh life situation of the main protagonist. In addition, the valuable ethic principle in this documentary can also be found in how life is handled in this story by looking directly at life’s brutality with an exquisite joy and calm. The personal grief in this film escapes the lurid, manipulative trap of the author and presents a firm moral to the audience.”

The number of awards won by "Joanna" is constantly growing. In June this film, produced by Wajda Studio, won the main award in the short documentary film competition at the Ismailia festival, the Small Gate of Freedom at Gdańsk DocFilm Festival and special mention at the festival Docs Barcelona. Earlier this year, "Joanna" was awarded by the jury and the audience at the Ukrainian festival Docudays UA, Creteil International Women's Film Festival as well the audience at the Europeans Medium-Length Film Meetings in the French Brive.
