“THE WHALE FROM LORINO” CINEMATOGRAPHER WINS GOLDEN FROG
We already know the winners of this year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival. The main award in the international documentary competition went to Piotr Bernaś, the cinematographer for Maciej Cuske’s “The Whale from Lorino”.
EnergaCAMERIMAGE is the largest and most famous festival devoted to the art of cinematography. Thanks to the festival, people began to notice that cinematographers co-create the visual side of films – they are artists, just like the director and actors. EnergaCAMERIMAGE is also an excellent forum not only for presentation, but also for discussions on the future of film art. By bringing together already recognised filmmakers and aiding debutants and students, it lets them explore new artistic avenues. This year’s edition of the festival was held online.
“The Whale from Lorino” tells the story of people who live in one of the most inaccessible and hostile places on Earth – the Chukchi Peninsula. Separated from Alaska by a narrow strait, the Peninsula lies at the north-eastern tip of Eurasia, bordered by the Chukchi Sea to the north and the Bering Sea to the south. It is currently inhabited by Russians, Chukchi, and Eskimos. The film shows how the ancient tradition of whale hunting brings together various members of the local community.
