"BLOSSOMING" BY KAMILA SERWICKA SELECTED FOR LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL
"Blossoming" by Kamila Serwicka has been selected for the programme of the 79th Locarno Film Festival, which will take place from 5 to 15 August. The documentary will be screened in Semaine de la Critique, an independent section dedicated to auteur feature-length documentaries.
For almost 80 years, Locarno has been associated with bold, innovative cinema and some of the most important figures in the film industry. Addressed both to general audiences and cinephiles, the festival brings together outstanding works from national and international cinema. One of its most recognisable symbols is the magnificent Piazza Grande, Europe’s largest open-air cinema, which welcomes thousands of viewers every year.
Blossoming will be presented in Semaine de la Critique, a section established in 1990 by the Swiss Association of Film Journalists in collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival. Each year, it presents seven feature-length documentaries as world or international premieres. The section focuses on innovative, auteur-driven films that move away from conventional trends, as well as on filmmakers who seek new ways of depicting reality and expanding the boundaries of audiovisual representation.
Kamila Serwicka’s documentary is an intimate story of growing up in the shadow of family tensions and intergenerational experiences. The director, who is also the film’s protagonist, observes the everyday lives of her closest relatives over the course of more than five years: her sisters, parents and grandmother. From these carefully recorded moments, she creates an emotional portrait of a home that is both a shelter and a place of difficult confrontations. A personal voice-over guides the viewer through a story about the longing for closeness, the process of becoming independent and the gradual reclaiming of one’s own voice.
