Intensive microworlds; that is how the singular thematic interconnection of the five presented documentaries could be described in one phrase. A journey, whether in the literal sense of travelling, or in the metaphoric sense of self-knowledge, dominates two of the films. While the Polish film "Dziennik z podróży" tells about the fragility of building a new friendship, the Polish feature-length documentary "Ojciec i syn" shows how difficult it is to reconstruct any relationship from scratch.
Specific communities immersed in their own worlds are revealed in the two films "Ya Tebya ne lyublyu" and "Bakhmaro". In the former, acclaimed director Pavel Kostomarov once again proves his creative courage and desire to innovate the film narrative, handing the camera over to a closed group of Russian teenagers to explore their social as well as inner lives, revealed by the protagonists with unexpected openness. While the immersion to the world of Russian youth is very intense, "Bakhmaro" rather keeps a certain distance, telling the story of a Georgian house to explore the fragmented post-Soviet society, energetically seeking its own identity. The diversity of the nominated films is highlighted by the fifth presented documentary, the Slovak short "Homo ciris" with a utopian tone.
Welcome to the scene of East European documentary; you won’t regret it! In the week from November 3 to 9, you can watch five Silver Eye Award nominees online and for free!
