“CHASM” AMONG THE GRAND OFF PRIZE WINNERS

On 27th November in the Warsaw Kamienica Theatre, the award ceremony of the World Independent Film Awards GRAND OFF took place. One of the winners was Wojciech Kasperski, the director of the documentary “Chasm”.

GRAND OFF is an extremely important point on the map of the Polish film events promoting independent cinema. The nominations for the GRAND OFF awards are given in several categories, among others, directing, screenplay, editing, the best feature film and the best documentary. The members of the GRAND OFF jury, that is, the representatives of the film circles from 28 countries, as the entity evaluating and determining the fate of the competing films, announced on the 27th November the list of this year’s winners. Among them, there is the Polish films “Chasm” by Wojciech Kasperski, who received the GRAND OFF award for the best documentary from Max Hansli, the President of the World Film Union UNICA.

“Chasm” is the second documentary by Wojciech Kasperski, after the famous and award-winning “The Seeds”. In both films, the director focuses his attention on the person living away from the civilization, cut off from the rest of the world, surrounded by wildlife and their own fears. In “The Seeds” this alienation of the individual is mirrored by the intricate and almost tragic story of a family living at the edge of Altaic village and on the verge of poverty. “Chasm” is a story about one protagonist, a lone seeker of gold, whose enormous desire for “being” and “having” overcomes the daily hardships and plunges him deeper and deeper into the Siberian chasm.
