Born in Wrocław in 1956. Film director, cinematographer, screenwriter and prose writer. In 1985 he graduated from the Cinematography Department of the Polish Film School i Łódź. He is an author of numerous short films and documentaries, films about art and educational films. He also made a lot of nature films, most of them focusing on cave exploration and mountain climbing. As a director of feature films Kolski debuted in 1990 with "The Burial of the Potato". Since then, he has made full-length features and in the process has become one of most original filmmakers in Poland. Since 2000 Jan Jakub Kolski has been a member of the European Film Academy.
