FIRE - FILM RESTORATION SUMMIT

The touring festival and the accompanying film collection Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema, the global victory lap of Kieslowski’s Decalogue 30 years after the original premiere, the prewar blockbusters brought back to life – Polish film reconstruction had some spectacular successes over the last few years. In November 2017 top experts from Poland and abroad will exchange knowledge and experience during FiRe, the international conference on digital film restoration.

The conference will take place in Warsaw on November 9-10, 2017. It will bring together leading reconstruction and digitalization experts from Poland, Italy, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Israel, and USA: cinematographers, producers, sound reconstruction specialists, as well as heads of top festivals showcasing film classics. Over the three days they will discuss best practices, most important challenges, and cutting-edge technologies. The conference will close with the premiere screening of the latest masterpiece brought back to former glory.

It’s hard to imagine a better place than Warsaw to discuss film reconstruction. It’s not just the many cinematographers, colorists or producers based here, but the context of the place: a city almost completely wiped out during the war and then revived from ruins. Rebuilding Warsaw posed questions similar to those faced by film reconstructors: should we restore the urban environment perfectly? Should the errors of the original architects and planners be corrected? Which traces of destruction to preserve and which to cover?

The FiRe conference is organized by the Polish Film Institute Debates will be held in English and Polish with simultaneous interpretation. Registration is obligatory.

Date: 9-10 november
Place: Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, ul. Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie 37/39
