WEEKEND FULL OF AWARDS!
The last weekend of July has proved extremely favourable for Polish documentary films. Our compatriots have won awards in Mexico, Kosovo, and… Wroclaw.
At Guanajuato International Film Festival — Expresión en Corto, which took place in two Mexican cities: San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato Capital, Piotr Złotowicz was awarded Grand Prix in Documentary Competition for his film “Charcoal Burners”. A few days before this short etude also received Honourable Mention at Lume Inter¬national Film Festival in Brazil. “Charcoal Burners” has already received 16 awards at international events, which makes the film this year’s record-holder within Polish short-formats.
Also on the last Sunday, Jakub Stozek’s film “Out of Reach” received Best International Short Dox award of DOKUFEST Festival in Prizren, Kosovo. After this year’s success at Sundance (Honourable Mention) or at Brazilian It’s All True Festival (Best Documentary), it is already 4th award that Stozek’s film has won.
On the last day of July, 11th New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw ended. “3 Days of Freedom” by Łukasz Borowski was chosen Best Documentary by the audience.
ABOUT THE FILMS:
“Charcoal Burners” is a short story of Marek and Janina’s, who work every summer in Bieszczady Mountains burning charcoal. We observe their everyday activities from dawn to dusk. Far from civilization, the protagonists live a simple, unhurried life, the rhythm of which is dictated by nature.
The protagonists of “Out of Reach”, sisters Karolina and Klaudia, decide to look for their mother, who has left home fourteen years ago. The girls are impressively mature, they solve their own problems, and support each other in every circumstance. On the threshold of adult life, they make another attempt at rebuilding family relations that for years have been neglected by adults.
“3 Days of Freedom” tells the story of Piotr, who first time in fifteen years goes on prison leave. The most simple activities are a real challenge to him. Lost, benumbed, and, at the same time enthralled, he tries to under stand today’s world. During the leave Piotr will have to confront his own life, to assess the past and the chances for the future, and to choose what is most important to him.
