“IN LIMBO” NOMINATED FOR THE EFA
The latest film by Alina Maksimenko is competing for two European Film Awards in the categories of Best Documentary and Best Film at the prestigious ceremony.
The European Film Award, established in 1988, is the continent's most esteemed cinematic accolade, often hailed as Europe's answer to the American Oscar. It is bestowed by members of the European Film Academy, with Polish director Agnieszka Holland taking the reins from Wim Wenders. The first ever recipient was none other than Krzysztof Kieślowski for his A Short Film About Killing. Polish cinema has since been a frequent contender, often grabbing the top honours.
In Limbo is a record by director Alina Maksimenko, who is caught by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Irpin near Kyiv. Bombed and cut-off from the rest of the world, the city becomes a trap which she manages to escape with one of the last evacuation groups. She reaches her parents, stranded in a nearby village. For the first few weeks, they try to live a normal life. Mum runs online classes, dad takes care of his cats and local animals, Alina films current events. However, the front is getting closer. A decision must be made – stay or flee?
