“THE LAST EXPEDITION” WINS EAGLE AWARD
Last evening saw the grand gala for the Polish Film Awards. The Eagle in the documentary category soared to Eliza Kubarska for her film about the outstanding Polish mountaineer.
The Polish Film Awards, also known as the Eagles, the annual awards of the Polish Film Academy, have been organised by the Independent Film Foundation for the Polish Film Academy since 1999. The Eagles were originated by Dariusz Jabłoński, film director and producer, who currently serves as President of the Polish Film Academy.
Wanda Rutkiewicz, Poland's most distinguished mountaineer, disappeared on 13th May 1992 while en route to Kangchenjunga. Her body was never recovered. Supposedly her mother claimed that if Wanda did not return, it would mean she had decided to join a Buddhist monastery. Following the trail of Wanda's final expedition is director Eliza Kubarska, herself an avid mountaineer. She speaks with witnesses of those events, confronting them with popular theories about Wanda's disappearance. Could it be possible that the Himalayan climber is still alive? The narrator of The Last Expedition is the protagonist herself, who kept an intimate audio diary about her journeys.
